UNITY ON THE BAY RACIAL JUSTIC MINISTRY

JOIN OUR VOTER REGISTRATION EFFORTS

Unity on the Bay’s Racial Justice Ministry has joined efforts with the non-profit advocacy organization, Florida Rising, to support our community with voter registration and sign-ups for Vote by Mail. Recent laws passed by the Florida Legislature makes it harder for people to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Our efforts will include educating our community in these changes and ensuring our community is able to vote their values.

We are grateful for the work being done by our Racial Justice Ministry (RJM). Birthed as a response to the deep conversations we all needed to have surrounding the murder of George Floyd, this ministry is particularly focused on healing and eradicating the racism experienced by Black people in the United States.

We provide resources, tools and education to create a safe space in which we empower positive advocacy and action toward eradicating systemic racism within Unity on the Bay, the community and our world.

Statement of Purpose & Affirmation

Unity on the Bay is a spiritual community which endeavors to heal racism by embracing diversity, promoting inclusion, fostering equality, understanding and respect. Our goal is to co-create a world without racism. We are committed to effecting change through the pursuit of social justice initiatives that affirm the humanity of all people through education, advocacy and dialogue. We believe that communication is the key to racial solidarity. We affirm that we are all one, born of the same Source.

Adoption of Dunbar Elementary

We are working to address educational disparities in our own backyard. Dunbar Elementary is a historic school in Overtown that has served thousands of students. Unfortunately, the school is under-resourced. A whopping 95% of students are from low-income families. The school is unable to offer extracurricular activities like art, music, or sports. What Dunbar does have are teachers and faculty who are dedicated to helping their 300+ students succeed.

Join us in supporting Dunbar Elementary by helping their teachers buy basic necessities for their classrooms. Use the button below to donate directly to Dunbar’s teachers through Donors Choose (you’ll be taken out of Unity’s website).

Get Involved

Currently, the Ministry has four teams that are doing the work of creating opportunities and spaces for our congregation to more consciously do the work needed towards racial justice, equality and equity, particularly for the black community.

The teams are:

  • Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Public Relations & Communications

  • Sacred Conversations

  • Speakers and Workshops

Volunteering within this ministry means:

  • Attending monthly team meetings to help create opportunities for understanding and eradicating racism

  • Attending quarterly events/activities that engage us in the work of healing and being anti-racist

  • Put into practice our Racial Justice Ministry Norms when we engage with each other and this work
