Last month, the Building Our Future Care & Communication Subcommittee hosted another Connection Session. This time the topic of conversation was “Church Without Walls.” Thank you to everyone who attended.

We learned a lot about our community though small group conversations learning about what types of experiences we enjoy outside of Unity that can be described as spiritual, meaningful and soulful versus fun, creative and dynamic. Today, we would like to share with all of you several of the key takeaways.

There were 5 common themes related to experiences that are considered Spiritual, Meaningful & Soulful.

  • Retreats

  • Travel Opportunities

  • Activities in Groups or in Solitude

  • Self-development Programs

  • Outdoor Activities & Elements

There were several examples mentioned by numerous people that could be included in multiple categories. These Include the following: yoga, meditation, music, service opportunities, 12-step programs, Prosperity Classes, Alcoholic Anonymous, Landmark or Gratitude trainings, gardening, hiking, nature trails, and more.

There were 7 descriptive themes related to experiences that are considered Dynamic, Fun & Creative.

  • Explorative

  • Artistic

  • Passion-related

  • Immersive

  • Interactive

  • Multi-beneficial

  • Unique

Many of the experiences mentioned followed along with these themes especially when related to service opportunities, fundraisers, community outings, and self-development programs. The experiences that were special and stood out from everyday events were those that incorporated multiple themes. Some specific events mentions included the following: Broadway shows, concerts by icons, storytelling events (The Moth, Lip Service, Pechacucha), Arsht Center performances, Van Gogh experience, dark dining, Painting with a Twist, Drag Bingo, Full Moon Kayaking, drumming circles, New World Symphony Wallcasts, night gardens, treasure mapping, Yogadance, skydiving, and more.

We are so grateful for this insight into the private lives of our community members. It is our hope that this knowledge be incorporated into our future home and programming at Unity on the Bay. Stay connected with us and look out for future opportunities to chat and learn from each other.
